For the first time in LARS history, six teams will compete in the 2014 LA Riot Squad Champions League.
Kickoff for the first game is at 10:00AM this Saturday, Jan 25 at El Dorado Park in Long Beach, CA.
Games will be played this weekend, Feb 8, Feb 15 to establish the four playoff teams. Semifinals come the week after, with the championship game at the StubHub Center slated tentatively for Saturday, March 1.
The LARS Champions League is an off-season tradition that has evolved from friendly pickup games between LARSers over the years into an organized competition. LARS members from across Southern California form groups and practice at different times for the main event.
According to Commissioner Ed Rodriguez , “The LCL is definitely a way to kill the offseason, but most importantly it is used to bring together friends to just play some soccer. Whatever team affiliation is represented during the match, we all end up at the local pub to have a pint with our second family. The LARS Champions League is quickly becoming one of the most anticipated events on our calendar and is growing with each passing year.”
Three teams are scheduled to join next year; the resurrected Whiskey & Mermaids FC (El Segundo) and teams from Orange County and Downtown LA.
